What we do
Building the Vision

A village of sex workers near the port of Matadi, in DRC, shared their dreams. "Me", tells Amida who looks younger than 19, "I dream of a happy family once I will be married. Find my soul mate, have children and be faithful to him. That is really my dream! . " Following Amidas' words, like a chorus, all our hosts confess they dream of marrying and having children.

"And what do you think of the risks of your profession related to your dream?"

"There's no doubt", says Amida, "my path shouldn't, in any case, cross the path of AIDS! The virus and me, we walk on parallel ways."

The last report received from the city of Matadi informs us that in the two camps which we visited, 46 women had asked for and had a voluntary HIV test.

An example of a community building their vision
Before a community can act purposefully, it needs to build a 'picture' of where it wants to go. In other words, it needs to translate the ideal of AIDS Competence into its own context.
We summarise a 3 stage process which leads to a community vision below. The process is described more fully in this document. (The pictures shown come from the process in action in Kinshasa, DR Congo.)

1. The Individual Vision
What do you wish to see the community become?

2. The Group Vision
The small group discussion. Consider the similarities and difference, and come up with a shared vision.
3. The Community Vision
Each group vision is presented and everyone listens and appreciates. And the challenge is then to come up with a shared vision for the whole community.
