AIDS Competence in Papua New Guinea

The Constellation entered into a 2 year partnership with the World Health Organisation and UNICEF to stimulate AIDS Competence in 5 provinces – the National Capital District, the Eastern Highlands, the Western Highlands, Morobe and Bougainville- in Papua New Guinea. This is done through the stimulation and support of Provincial Facilitation Teams.

One year and half after the launch of the AIDS Competence Process (ACP) in Papua New Guinea, results are there. Communities in five provinces discussed the HIV issue and how it affects them in their own life, built a common vision for the future and take action to become AIDS Competent. Five Provincial SALT teams composed of highly committed community leaders, NGOs, Provincial Aids Councils, health volunteers and religious leaders have taken ownership of the ACP and stimulate the communities to move forward on their journey towards AIDS Competence.

Scaling up of ACP
Alois Pukinei, Public Health Officer in Bougainville, explains his vision of ACP introduced to all communities in Bougainville. "The only way is to go down to the village level and let the people have the ownership of it. The only way to be able to do that is through the ACP process."
